Book Design and Illustrations

This handmade soft cover book is an artistic take on the different perspectives people have on the Virgin de Guadalupe, inspired by my exploration of East Cesar Chavez Street in Austin, Texas. During the exploration process, I took various photos of the neighborhood, including the people that resided there and the various Guadalupe murals and statues that I saw along the way. Using the photos I took, I decided to give each its' own fictional story of how the Virgen of Guadalupe influenced that person or thing using excerpts from the book Goddess of the Americas: Writings on the Virgin of Guadalupe, edited by Ana Castillo. I divided the book into three different sections - essays, prose, and poetry - based on the type of writing.

I hand drew and colored the illustrations with watercolor, using the reference photos that were taken during the exploration process.  I wanted the book to feel raw and personal by creating this handmade feeling with the illustrations and the materials I used to create the book.
